Learning Communities are used by many STEP projects as a strategy for improving retention , particularly during the freshman and sophomore years. Although there are many approaches to learning communities, all involve linking courses or coursework together to provide greater curricular coherence and increased interaction between students and faculty. Learning communities may be "residential" or "non-residential", but in either case they are designed to bring together and develop bonds among students with common academic interests.
