A Community of Practice for NSF STEM Projects

Sustaining your STEP grant through partnerships with Workforce boards

The University of Central Florida’s STEP 1A effort, called the EXCEL program at UCF, has been successfully institutionalized, since summer of 2011, now positively affecting 200 students per year, helping them to get through the rigors of a STEM degree and the difficult transitioning from high school to college in their first year at a large metropolitan university. One of the pivotal partnerships that affected UCF administration’s decision to institutionalize our effort is the one that UCF established with its regional workforce board that is the Workforce Central Florida. EXCEL’s UCF core team and a prior Workforce Board executive presented a webinar, where the details of this partnership were delineated. The webinar also described a NSF sponsored workshop (STEPWork) that will bring together STEP grantees and regional workforce board representatives to foster similarly successful partnerships. A recording of the webinar and the accompanying powerpoint presentation is available below. We also welcome any comments/suggestions that you might have about STEPWork.
