ALW 2018: Active Learning in Mechanics of Materials at Missouri S&T

Active learning is about engaging students in their learning process and could be done in various ways. One way would be motivating students curiosity about subject by exposing them to the content and providing challenging and engaging topics before class setting. I assign short videos to students along with a pre-class quiz to make them attend in the class with some questions about the topics of discussion. In class, I use quizzes with randomly generated numbers to go more in depth in topics and reinforce their understanding. An online web-based system is developed for such active learning activities that provide students with instantaneous feedback so they can find their mistakes and correct their solution. Students are sometimes divided into groups that can compete with each other by answering the questions and helping their team member to increase the average of their group. Measured data shows that such active learning activities has positive impact on students learning and success.
