New Blog from Dr. Cheryl P. Talley: What does it mean to be a Black scientist?

June 12, 2018

STEM Central is pleased to announce a new blog, posted by Dr. Cheryl Talley, associate professor in the department of Psychology at Virginia State University.

So, what DOES it mean to be a Black Scientist? After grappling with this question, Dr. Cheryl Talley takes a lesson from two of the most preeminent scientists from the last century, George Washington Carver and Ernest Everett Just. Then as now, scientists from groups, under-represented in STEM, must choose where to place focus and attention; the research or the mission. Both choices have consequences which are exacerbated by the fact that the culture-at-large often has a different narrative about what it means to be from a marginalized group. These conflicting world views are not readily apparent, even to NSF reviewers.
